add status to initscript

Hello,
I've made an improvement to the initscript which enables a 'status' command to work. This is a particularly useful initscript functionality. I've attached a diff of the two files that provide this to this ticket. It would be excellent if you could include this in the future.
I also made one minor change to the daemon_helper.rb to require mongrel, instead of using the 'gem mongrel' because this wont work if you have installed mongrel via other mechanism besides gem (such as the debian package).
